Motor skills through time: Understand your development

Our mobility, our motor skills, are constantly changing. As children and adolescents, we improve by leaps and bounds, then we maintain the level reached for a while before finally a gradual decline sets in. This change is related on the one hand to our age and on the other hand to our ability to improve and exercise. In this article, we focus on adulthood. But if you’re curious about what it looks like with the kids, because your little ones might want to try a new sport, then check out our appropriate blog article.

The 4 Stages of Adulthood: From Flowering to Mature

Early adulthood extends from about 18 to 35 years of age. During this time, our human motor skills are fully developed. But beware! If you do not demand your muscles in this phase, a regression process of your performance already begins here (Weineck et al., 2010).

From age 30 to age 50, middle adulthood, your motor performance decreases. The later adulthood, about 45 to 70 years of age, is characterized by a greater decline in your motor performance. And finally comes late adulthood, from 60/70 years to old age, which is characterized by a significant decline in motor skills (ibid.).

Getting older? No problem with strength training!

The natural aging process can be scary. But the good thing is: You can slow down this process through sports activity. Yes, none of us remains eternally young. But you can decide in which state you get older. Muscle tissue that is not used and stressed regresses with age. Through properly dosed strength training you can counteract this reduction (Güllich & Krüger, 2013).

You are certainly wondering now how you can best implement this and find your individual and versatile training. In the following video, we show you 6 exercises on the gym rings that use your entire muscles:
