Getting stronger without muscle building?

Understanding Weight Training: Neural Adjustments and Muscle Growth

Why do you get better at new exercises faster?

You certainly know this: You try a new exercise and in the second or third set it is easier for you and you can move more weight or create more repetitions. This is not because your muscles have suddenly grown! Rather, there are neural adaptations in training behind it. Over the course of the training session, your inter- and intramuscular coordination improves, so that your body can better control the muscles and apply more strength. These neural factors are a big part of the strength gain in the early stages of your training.

Neural Adjustments vs. Muscle Growth

In the first week of training, improved neural control is the biggest factor in your strength gain. Over time, this impact decreases and muscle growth (hypertrophy) becomes more important to make you stronger in the long term. In the graph below, the first two representations of a muscle show that the muscle cross section remains unchanged, but the number of muscle fibers activated increases. This supports the statement of the initial increase in strength by neural factors. Only in the third picture you see an enlargement of the muscle cross section due to hypertrophy.

What does this mean for your training?

Muscle growth above all needs time and continuity! Your body first reacts to training stimuli with neural adjustments and thus optimally exploits the available possibilities. Only after some time, when the training stimulus persists and the existing muscles are no longer sufficient, follow structural adjustments of muscle building.

Tips for effective strength training

To build muscle, it is not helpful to constantly change your exercises. In this case, your body usually only adapts neuronally to the loads, but the desired muscle build-up remains. Therefore, note the following tips for your training:

  1. Exercise according to a fixed plan: Exercises and training days should be fixed.
  2. Improve your movement performance and increase repetitions or weight.
  3. Change exercises scheduled, either by time intervals or after achieving certain goals.

By taking these aspects into account in the design of your training plan and implementing them in a disciplined manner, you will create a progressive training stimulus that will challenge and grow your muscles in the long term.
